The many faces of Lake Titicaca

Five years ago I took a couple of months out to do a whirlwind trip to South America. Mainly I had dreamed of seeing the animals on Galapagos Islands and hiking in the high altitude mountains of the Andes. This is the final stop in the retelling of that journey. Kris

After the buzz of hiking the Inca Trail our little group of five travelled by bus to the shores of Lake Titicaca; a formidable volume of water that feels more like an ocean than a lake. In fact the lake that borders Peru and Bolivia is the biggest in South America and it’s simply beautiful.

We spent days exploring the islands, staying with a Bolivian family – getting involved in the kitchen and local traditions, watching some killer sunsets reflected in the immense blue, and basically spent time floating in the silence of the quiet life that exists there. The best thing about a home stay is of course the people. Many communities on the lake subsidize their farming income by taking in tourists, in return they offer an understanding of the daily habits of island life. My family gave me a hand made woolen hat and took us out for a lively night of percussion music and dancing at the village hall.

Staying on the lake was to be the perfect end to my South American adventure, just the taste I needed to understand that I wanted to return for a lengthy visit. Little did I know that I would be back less than three years later with my Colombian partner!

As usual I’ll let my images tell the rest of the story and give you an insight in to the communities that exist in this very special part of the world.
